Raw steel shelving unit divides the dining room from the sunken living room. Shelves are interchangeable to create flexible storage units. Shallower shelves on one side provide a ‘breakfast bar’ area where stools fit underneath. So far the region is in heavy use holding drinks for the living room, providing charging space for laptops with recharging headspace looking out over the river, and allowing preschooler tv access to the otherwise babygated-off lower living room.
Stairs to the sunken areas of the main floor are also raw steel, echoing the structural support running up the house’s main staircase.
